Dog Itching Constantly? Here's How to Find the Cause
Itching is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The pattern of where and when narrows it down.
Where they itch tells you a lot
Tail base / lower back: classic flea pattern. Belly, paws, armpits, ears: classic environmental allergy pattern (atopy). Ears only: ear infection. Paws being licked obsessively: allergies or yeast. Hot spots that appear overnight: bacterial infection on top of an allergy. Pay attention to where they go first when they sit down to scratch.
Fleas — the first thing to rule out
Even one flea can trigger weeks of itching in flea-allergic dogs. Use a fine-tooth flea comb on the lower back and tail base. Look for adult fleas or 'flea dirt' (small black specks that turn red on a wet paper towel). If you find any, treat all pets in the household, plus the environment — fleas live mostly off the pet.
Environmental allergies
Most dogs with year-round itching have atopic dermatitis. Triggers include pollen, dust mites, mold, and grass. Dogs typically itch their paws, ears, and belly. Bathing in a gentle hypoallergenic shampoo, wiping paws after walks, and washing bedding weekly all help. Your vet can prescribe medication that actually controls the itch — modern allergy meds for dogs are very effective.
When itching needs a vet
Open sores or scabs. Strong smell from the skin (bacterial or yeast infection). Hair loss in patches. Itching that's interrupting sleep. Swollen, red, weepy ears. Itching that doesn't respond to OTC flea treatment. If your dog can't stop scratching for 5 minutes, it's vet-time.
