Dog Coughing — What the Sound Tells You
Dogs cough for many reasons. The sound, timing, and what triggers it narrow it down quickly.
The four common cough types
Honking 'goose-like' cough = kennel cough or tracheal collapse. Wet productive cough with white foam = sometimes heart disease, sometimes pneumonia. Dry hacking cough at night or after lying down = often heart disease in older small-breed dogs. Sudden cough during exercise or after drinking = possible inhalation or foreign body. Any cough that lasts more than a week deserves a vet visit.
Kennel cough explained
Highly contagious — picked up at boarding, daycare, dog parks, training classes. Hallmark is a loud, dry, honking cough often ending in a gag or retch. Most cases self-resolve in 1–2 weeks in healthy adult dogs. Puppies, seniors, and immunocompromised dogs need vet care. Vaccinated dogs can still get it but cases are usually milder.
Heart disease cough — the one not to miss
Common in small-breed seniors. The cough is dry or moist, worse at night or when lying down, and often paired with: reduced exercise tolerance, faster breathing at rest, occasional fainting. If your senior dog is coughing more in the last few weeks, ask for a heart workup.
When to seek vet care
Cough lasting over 7 days. Cough plus reduced energy. Cough plus blue or pale gums. Cough plus collapse or fainting. Any cough in a puppy or senior dog. Difficulty breathing — open-mouth breathing in dogs is a red flag at rest.
