Dog Dehydration Symptoms — and the 60-Second Home Test
By the time most owners notice dehydration, the dog is already 5–7% down. Catch it earlier with these checks.
The 60-second skin tent test
Find the loose skin on the back of the neck or between the shoulder blades. Pinch a small fold up, then release. In a hydrated dog, the skin snaps back instantly. In a mildly dehydrated dog, it takes 1–2 seconds. In a moderately to severely dehydrated dog, the tent stays for several seconds or doesn't fully retract. This is the single most useful at-home test.
What gums tell you
Healthy dog gums are bubblegum pink and slick-wet. Press lightly with your finger — the spot should turn white and pink up again in under 2 seconds (capillary refill time). Dry, tacky gums or a slow refill mean dehydration. Pale, white, blue, or yellow gums are an emergency — different problem, same vet visit.
7 early signs of dog dehydration
1) Reduced energy. 2) Loss of appetite. 3) Sticky or dry gums. 4) Sunken-looking eyes. 5) Slow capillary refill. 6) Less elastic skin (slow tent retraction). 7) Reduced urination or dark-yellow urine. Any two together = take it seriously.
Causes — what dehydrates a dog fast
Vomiting and diarrhea are the top causes — both lose fluid quickly. Heat exposure, especially in flat-faced breeds. Fever. Kidney disease. Diabetes. Refusing to drink for any reason. Puppies and senior dogs dehydrate faster than healthy adults — don't 'wait and see' with them.
