Dog Not Eating? Here's What It Could Mean

A dog refusing food for more than 24 hours is one of the earliest signs something is off. Here's how to tell mild from serious.

Dog Not Eating: Causes, When to Worry, What to Do

Why is my dog not eating?

Loss of appetite (anorexia in dogs) can be triggered by anything from a stressful day to a serious illness. Dogs are creatures of routine — when they skip a meal, it usually means something has changed: their environment, their gut, their teeth, or their energy. The key question isn't just 'is my dog eating?' but 'what else has changed?'

Common causes of appetite loss in dogs

Stress or recent change at home (new pet, moved house, owner away). Dental pain — broken tooth, gum infection, foreign object stuck in the gum. Gastrointestinal upset from eating something they shouldn't have. Mild infection or low-grade fever. Side effect of recent vaccination (usually clears in 24h). More serious causes include parvovirus, pancreatitis, kidney disease, liver disease, or an obstruction in the gut. The pattern matters: a single skipped meal is rarely an emergency; 24+ hours with other symptoms is.

Warning signs that mean call the vet today

Vomiting more than twice in a day. Diarrhea with blood. Lethargy — won't get up, won't greet you, won't move for treats. Pale or yellow gums. Bloated, hard belly. Whining when touched on the abdomen. Not drinking water for 12+ hours. Any of these alongside not eating shifts the situation from 'monitor' to 'go now.'

What to do at home (first 12 hours)

Offer something gentle and tempting: plain boiled chicken, plain rice, or a small amount of low-sodium bone broth. Skip kibble for one meal. Keep water available and clean. Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, and energy levels. Note exactly when they last ate, last drank, last pooped, last peed — your vet will ask. Do not give human painkillers. Do not force-feed.
